Sheaffer update 2

Recent, illustration graduate Mark Porter, and winner of this years 'Creativity Artists Papers Award Excellence in Illustration Award', has also been bringing text and language into his work this semester, with the help of his Sheaffer pen. Mark who will to begin post graduate studies this autumn said, "My work gives me a huge sense of satisfaction. The concept is what's important to me and I hope that I have reflected some of my thought processes as well as the evolution of work, in the designs I'm showing here. I'm not a fan routine and hope my work signifies how much I enjoy experimenting with image and text"

Work experience - Daniel Dean

It is always interesting to hear from Visual Communication students, during work placements and it's great to have the chance to see the results of creative projects they have been working on.

Second year Graphics Student Daniel Dean has been designing vehicle wraps for West Midlands based online shop, Skatehut. One of the largest online stores of its kind in the UK, Skatehut are delighted with Daniels designs.

Employment update - Kate Farrell

By 2016, we want to be one of the country's top three providers of high quality affordable homes, supporting thriving communities. And the three things we value are team work, customer focus and continuous improvement. 

Their Wolverhampton office is based on the Wolverhampton Business Park, Stafford Road. I'm working with Steve Barnes, in house design manager, as part of the communications team. The rest of the team is made up of PR officers and copywriters. 

The work I have  enjoyed producing so far has been very diverse, including the production of customer home-owner surveys, logos for sub-sections of the business, movie editing for housing open day presentations, flyers for community events, annual progress reports and web graphics. I'm visiting printers and speaker to suppliers and feel the experience is invaluable for my portfolio and CV."

Typographic Research Initiative in Wolverhampton

This afternoon saw the School of Art and Design successfully hosting the latest meeting of the Typographic Research Initiative. Today's symposium and addressed by 3 speakers, graphic designer Louise Carrier (http://www.louisecarrier.co.uk/), Graphic Communication Subject Leader, Jeff Leak and Senior Lecturer and graphic designer, Jessica Glaser. 

3 fascinating talks prompted plenty of discussion and thought provoking debate. Louise Carrier (featured in the photographs shown within this post) eloquently compared the experience of reading the printed version UK newspaper the Sunday Times, with her approach to it's online counterpart.

Jeff Leak discussed and shared his extensive collection of photographs of historic painted signs form the French roadside, as well as his growing selection of faded neon signs form Hungary and beyond.

Jessica Glaser reflected upon the synchronicity of visual and verbal language, with particular reference to page layout and her own personal experience of being a designer who is also a writer.

We are an established, busy design studio in Covent Garden. We require an experienced creative artworker for a freelance position for the next 1-2 months. The applicant must be able to work in our small, friendly offices in Covent Garden. No home/remote working possible.
You will be working on an interesting range of projects for major corporate clients in print, screen, exhibitions and events. You should be enthusiastic and motivated, with an eye for detail and excellent typography skills.
Experience & Skill Set:
• Artworking of materials ranging from printing, large scale building branding, corporate communications, identities and events.
• Ensuring all jobs going to print exceed our internal quality controls.
• Liaising with client, suppliers and the design studio team
• Excellence technical skills with fluency in Adobe CS InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop.
• A good communicator and team worker.
• Maintaining the server back up system
• The ability to make a good cup of tea is a real advantage
