Competition: Make an Artwork Celebrating the 21st Anniversary of the Incorporation of the University

The University has a long history dating back to the establishment of a School of Art in 1851. However, it was not until 1992 that it was granted the title of University. You are invited to submit proposals for an artwork celebrating the 21st Anniversary of this incorporation in response to the theme of ‘Achievement’. 

The work will be permanently sited and highly publicly visible – this a great early career opportunity. It is possible to respond to this brief through a placement module either at Level 5 or 6. Talk to your PATS tutor or Hilary Price about this in the first instance: (H.Price@wlv.ac.uk)

The competition is open to all students at Levels 5, 6 and MA.

The University seeks to commission three art works. These can be from the following media:

· Two dimensional artwork, including painting, photography

· Three dimensional artwork, including bronze, iron, ceramic, glass

· Digital media

The fee for commissioned work is £1500.
Materials will be paid for by the University by arrangement.
You will be offered technical assistance in realising your work.

There are two selection stages.

· To be considered for the opportunity, you are asked to submit a worked up concept showing what the work will look like, its dimensions, and how it will be made. This should be accompanied by a brief statement not to exceed 500 words detailing how you imagine the work will be ‘read’ by its audience, and in particular how the work responds to the theme of ‘Achievement’. This work should be carefully presented to show your proposal to its best advantage. The deadline for this initial work is: Thursday 13th December, 5pm. (Work to be handed into Marina Gavriel in the School office on the 5th Floor).

· A selection of these proposals will be put forwards to a judging panel for commissioning.

Successful works will:

· Respond to the theme in an imaginative way

· Be joyful and aspirational objects

· Be made to a high standard

· Be of a scale that the work can hold its own in a large interior space such as a foyer or Learning Centre

The artist’s fee will cover the purchase of the artwork by SAD. The artist and the University will both have the right to reproduce the artwork in perpetuity and without mutual consultation.
The work must be ready for installation between late April and May 27th 2013.

The Berlin trip update!

The details of next Semesters Berlin trip are now available.

The total cost is £325, this includes return coach transfers to the airport from the University and to the hotel in Berlin, flights, bed and breakfast accommodation in multi-bedded rooms (with private facilities), checked in luggage and insurance. We will be travelling early on the morning of Saturday 9th March 2013 returning on the evening of Tuesday 12th March 2013 (4 days / 3 nights). Single and twin rooms are available at a supplement, please contact me for costs.

We have 40 places available and these will be allocated on a first come first serve basis. Friends and relatives are welcome and can book via this link too. Berlin is a vibrant and exciting city to explore, our accommodation is centrally located so easy to get around.

If you wish to come on the trip you will need to book your place by paying a NON REFUNDABLE deposit of £125. This has to be paid by 30th November 2012 (balance to be paid by 14th January 2013). We cannot accept late payments as the system will close.

You will need your passport details to book, and those of anyone wishing to book with you. You can pay by debit or credit card. If you are an overseas student you will need to check if you need a VISA to travel to Germany.

Sky Arts Ignition: Futures Fund

The Sky Arts Ignition: Futures Fund, is offering £30,000 bursaries and mentoring for five emerging artists aged 18-30 to fund their creative practice for a year. The fund is open to applicants from the fields of visual arts, music, dance, performing arts, and creative producing. 

The fund is designed to help the winners to develop their creative practice and take their work to the next level.
