Exhibitions not to be missed.

2 exhibitions coming up at Compton Verney, the award winning art gallery in Warwickshire, are Quentin Blake - As large as life and Remember, remember: A history of fireworks in Britain.

Quentin Blake is one of Britain's best-loved and most successful illustrators, having won countless awards and appointed Britain’s first Children’s Laureate. He is known by young and old alike, his name having been synonymous with his illustrations for Roald Dahl’s books. Recently Quentin has been commissioned by hospitals in the UK and abroad to produce works which have a therapeutic effect on their residents. Quentin Blake - As large as life brings together over 60 works for the first time at Compton Verney, for visitors to experience their effects for themselves.

Remember Remember, is the first exhibition of its kind, exploring Britain's November the fifth celebration through the history of Fire Festivals, the Gunpowder plot of 1605 and the astonishingly vivid advertising and packing of domestic fireworks from the 20th century. The history of fireworks in Britain will be vividly brought to life in this multi-media display.

The main body of the exhibition will look at the vital artwork connected to the design and display of 20th century Fireworks. This promises to be a nostalgic sweetshop of delight for visitors with fireworks from all the main UK companies, such as Standard, Pains, Wessex, Brock’s and Astra on display. Visitors will recognize the well-known domestic brands such as Jack in a Box, Mine of Serpents, Traffic Lights and Screech Owl as they walk through a charted history of the British firework industry.

These 2 shows run from 15 October 2011 to 11 December 2011. Find out more at http://www.comptonverney.org.uk/default.aspx

Cathrine Lillesund Toennessen

“When I graduated from University of Wolverhampton in 2009 with BA(Hons) Graphic Communication I returned home, to Norway. I started working for Save The Children and, in particular, their school-focused project “Rewrite The Future” (http://www.savethechildren.org/site/c.8rKLIXMGIpI4E/b.6148051/k.BB46/Rewrite_the_Future.htm)
My job involved travelling around Rogaland - meeting and talking to people; trying to further the charity’s mission and encourage donations.
I stayed with them for around eight months and during this time I decided to further my education to reflect these new interests. I’m now in my second year at Markedshøyskolen on my second degree! I feel that Marketing with a major in PR and reputation will really help to expand upon the learning that I did at Wolverhampton.
However, even while doing this, I’m still designing; working freelance for Metropolis – Clean Scene: designing posters for drug-free events for youth in my own hometown. I’m even involved in design and communication at our own Student Union here in Oslo so my interest in graphic communication is still being put to good use!” (http://www.studentunionen.no)
