A new date will be confirmed soon.

Apologies for any inconvenience caused

Congratulations Kate Ackley and Adam Beckett

The Orion Publishing Group and the leading illustration agency, Illustration Ltd, have announced that Kate Ackley from The University of Wolverhampton, visual communication department has won their inaugural Student Illustration Competition.

The runner-up prize was awarded to visual communication student Adam Beckett. His highly original design for Graham Joyce’s novel, Some Kind of Fairy Tale was highly praised by the judges.

Lucie Stericker, Creative Director, Orion Publishing Group commented "All the judges were extremely impressed by the calibre of entries. The winner considered the whole cover and presented very competent final artworks. Congratulations to Kate".

Kate Ackley’s winning entry was a stunning new design for Jostein Gaarder’s phenomenal worldwide bestseller Sophie’s World. She has won the opportunity to work with the award-winning Art Department at Orion and to have her design appear on the book. Kate has also won a 12 month mentoring course from Illustration Ltd, who will provide support with her portfolio to prepare it for graduation, and she will also be able to visit the agency in London who will option her work for future representation.

Kate Ackley said: "I am extremely delighted to have won the competition and am very excited about the opportunity to work with two such well-established companies at the start of my career. I'm very grateful to have had the chance to illustrate a cover for such an interesting book. My idea was inspired by an intriguing metaphor that likens the universe to a rabbit being pulled from a hat, and references the humans that dwell inside the rabbit's fur".

Congratulations Kate and Adam

Just Have to Share - Sarah Hyndman, Wake Up & Smell the Fonts

Designer Sarah Hyndman explores typography as we experience it in our every day lives under the banner of Type Tasting. In her TEDx talk she shares a story of type and invites us to consider our emotional response to the printed word.

Each font/typeface has a personality that influences our interpretation of the words we read by evoking our emotions and setting the scene. We all understand this instinctively but it happens on a subconscious level. Sarah shows us that conscious awareness of the emotional life of fonts can be entertaining and ultimately give us more control over the decisions we make.

Advocate - Internships

We run an active internship program here at Advocate that we hope many students or career seekers will find very beneficial. We attract students in art history, design, illustration and related courses. We also employ bilingual agents so we attract language students as well.

We forge close links with many colleges and often invite students in for Q&A sessions where they can get advice on their portfolios. We were sponsors of the illustration exam question for the D&AD board and offered competition prizes including cash of £5000!

If you would like to see the inner workings of the leading artist representation agency, then the best way is to spend some time with us as an intern. You will share in our daily tasks such as folio management, site maintenance, project managing etc etc but no tea making I promise! You will learn how artists are briefed, what's hot and what you have to do as an illustrator to get work in the real world. We will give you a reference that will make a future employer cry, for the right reasons of course. Finally as a souvenir you get a sought after Advocate courier bag and we will pick up lunch and travel expenses if you complete the term. Minimum term is 10 working days - Maximum 30.

There is no mistaking that interns have become essential to the running of this busy agency. We get to spread the Advocate message around tomorrow's art and design professionals - internationally. We offer a recruiting platform (5 of our current staff were recruited from internships) and we get help, not cheap labour.

We also welcome international interns. If you have basic spoken and written English, we would love to hear from you. We would accommodate you in a local hotel and provide a meal and travel allowance. Interns must be EU citizens or have a valid work permit to work in the UK.
