Kiss Exhibition

Third year Visual Communication Students are exhibiting work in the Bessant Gallery of the School of Art, on the theme of the Kiss. In visual culture the kiss has evolved from ancient narrative, legend, propaganda, ritual and myth, to become subject of interpretation and re-interpretation.

Responses to the theme on display include research into occurrences of the kiss in pulp romance, extracted and represented; the anticipation of spontaneous affection in the iconic photo kiss is re considered in public places through the constructed absence of affection; social media campaigns to re promote the kiss and encourage awareness of International Kissing Day; the reflective language of hand made endearment is recrafted using the instant messaging symbols of the emoji; virus micrographs as works of art, highlight the darker side of press reports on bacterial studies conducted around the act of kissing whilst in a play on the emotionally explosive moment the surface graphics of fireworks are appropriated to convey reality accounts of the first kiss.
The show is open until 18th March 2016

This exhibition will form part of Artsfest in June

Dr Rina Arya - Abject Visions: Powers of Horror in Art and Visual Culture

The latest book of Dr Rina Arya, Reader in Visual Communication is to be published by Manchester University Press in May.

This volume brings together leading international scholars to debate the continuing importance and relevance of the concept of abjection for the interpretation of modern and contemporary culture. This interdisciplinary collection includes important new essays that draw on the work of Georges Bataille, Judith Butler, Julia Kristeva and other key critical thinkers to provide innovative readings of works of art, film, theatre and literature. The clear and accessible essays in this volume extend the existing literature on abjection in exciting new ways to demonstrate the enduring richness of the concept.

Rina has edited this book with Nicholas Chare, Associate Professor of Art History in the Department of History of Art and Film Studies at the Université de Montréal

Using a mix of 3D printing and a few well-placed shadows, this sundial designed by Mojoptix projects the actual time as if displayed on a digital clock. The plastic component that casts the shadow—called a gnomon— is printed with tiny holes that create pinpoint dots of light in the form of digits as the sun shines through.
