This talk will examine the work of two of the leading designers in Southern California in the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s, Kem Weber and Paul T. Frankl. Weber and Frankl, like many of those working in California in this period, were recent immigrants from Central Europe--Weber from Berlin, Frankl from Vienna.
This lecture will explore how the two men adapted to the special cultural climate of Los Angeles and, in turn, how their distinctive approaches contributed to fostering the specific look of California Modern design.

Simon goes Tribal
Simon Richings graduated from Wolverhampton in 1996 with a First Class Honours Degree in Graphic Communication. As part of his course he spent one of his semesters studying at California State University, Long Beach, undertaking an exchange programme.
After a short period of freelance work in London, Simon was hired by a small, graphic design agency in his home town of Bristol. A solid seven years there saw him rise into a senior design role, working on mainly business-to-business projects for a range of regional clients. During this time he honed his layout and Photoshop skills, while spending much of his spare time writing tabletop role-playing games and obsessing over new technology. Another period of freelancing followed, including a brief involvement in the founding of Science Education Arts (SEA) - a practice specialising in design for those sectors he had most passion for.
In 2006 he began working with digital advertising agency Tribal DDB on an entirely different sort of project. A friend at the agency figured he was right for an unusual hybrid task: designing and writing an online murder mystery game for Hasbro to promote their Cluedo brand. More work from Tribal followed and Simon accepted a permanent role there in 2007 as a senior art director. From this point on, he's had the luxury of working with some great designers, freeing him up to concentrate on his area of strength - the ideas themselves.
High profile work for Volkswagen, Guinness and other big brands followed, including the highly awarded Monopoly City Streets (for Hasbro, again). This combined the familiar board game with Google maps - players could buy any street in the world, including their own, and they did - 1.7 million of them. Simon has now risen to the dual role of Head of Creative for Tribal and Digital Creative Director for DDB (the famous traditional advertising agency), working with some very talented creatives, designers, developers and technologists.
Simon believes his time studying at Wolverhampton played a key role in his current success, despite his lateral step into another discipline:
"The Graphic Communication course at Wolverhampton gave me a fantastic grounding in techniques for idea generation, and taught me to always root my work in something deeper than pure aesthetics. This made the jump into advertising much, much easier than it would have been if all I'd learnt was technique."

HARD - A Bookazine by Ruben Scupin
Many visual communication students have an interest in designing books and magazines. German designer Ruben Scupin has been in touch to share his inspiring design for HARD, a bookazine that explores the topics of fashion and beauty in a highly innovative manner. Rubens design is beautifully produced and truly interactive, incorporating elements such as pop-ups, lenticular images, stitching and glow in the dark detail.

As part of his prize, final year graphics student Daniel Dean has attended a recent Evisu launch. Daniel is pictured here being congratulated by David Haye, the former WBA heavyweight champion.

A New Look At Nature - competition
The Campaign for Drawing (organisers of The Big Draw) has launched an exciting new arts prize in collaboration with The Guild of St George. The John Ruskin Prize invites everyone 18+ to submit artworks that take ‘A New Look At Nature’.
The prestigious competition awards an impressive prize with the outright winner receiving £1000 plus opportunities to show their work at the Millennium Gallery in Sheffield and at Brantwood, the historic Lake District home of John Ruskin himself. Nine runners-up will also be invited to exhibit in the Brantwood show this autumn.

The Lighthouse Cinema needs your help
The cinema landscape has changed dramatically in the last 10 years with the digital revolution. The UK has been at the forefront in the switch to digital cinema with the UK Film Council launching the Digital Screen Network of 210 cinemas across the country. We became part of this network, which enabled digital projection capability in just one of our screens. This has allowed a successful and varied programme of independent, contemporary and classic film, alongside live content from around the world, and productions made by regional filmmakers.
The support from this Network has now come to an end and we are entering into an uncertain period. In order to maintain the unique cinema programme which Light House currently offers its audiences, we need to make both screens fully digital by upgrading its projection equipment.
If we are unable to fully upgrade to digital we will only be able to show a gradually diminishing selection of films into the future. More and more new releases will only be available in a digital format rather than on 35mm film. Light House will not have access to classic films which have been converted to digital. This will result in us being unable to cater for the needs of local and regional audiences.
After 25 years of investment from the local authority and other funding bodies, and support from loyal audience members, Light House wants to overcome this risk and ensure that we are able to maintain and extend our programming capabilities and support regional filmmakers for another 25 years and beyond! And of course this will mean that Wolverhampton continues to have a leading independent cinema so that local residents can access a unique cultural offering right on their doorstep.
We are looking to raise £7,500 towards the cost of this project and we are inviting you to donate from as little as £1. In return for your investment into your local cinema we will recognise your valued contribution with our rewards…

3D Type in Corrugated Cardboard
Quite a few students have become interested in creating 3D type. Take a look at the work of Farah Tamachi for her thesis. Farah, recent graduate from the York/Sheridan Bachelor of Graphic Design Honours Program has produced a 6ft wall installation filled with elaborate script type and flourishes. Sarah Browne-How to Use Fool’s Gold
Ikon presents the first UK solo exhibition by Dublin-based artist Sarah Browne, a survey of film and sculptural works, including the artist’s entry for the 2009 Venice Biennale. Using ‘the economy’ as the basis for her artistic practice, Browne works with small communities of people, documenting resourceful forms of exchange such as gifting, subsistence, poaching and subsidies, to reveal the hidden social relations that exist in small-scale economic structures.
A Model Society (2007) stems from research – undertaken prior to the recent financial crisis – in which Iceland was declared the happiest nation on earth. Browne advertised for knitwear models in Reykjavik newspapers and then surveyed respondents about the quality of life in Iceland. The models are presented within iconic Icelandic landscapes, wearing traditional lopi sweaters in which selected phrases from their comments, such as ‘no war’ and ‘rotten politics’, have been knitted. In works like these, the artist taps into the personal, emotional underpinnings of both national identity and macroeconomic forces.

There is a lot of type on display at the Ikon gallery at the moment, including the Work of Hamish Fulton.
This exhibition, a major collaboration between Ikon and Turner Contemporary, Margate is the first museum show for British artist Hamish Fulton since his retrospective at Tate Britain in 2002. Fulton describes himself as a ‘walking artist’, with his work joining the two separate disciplines of walking and art.
In 1973, having walked over 1000 miles in 47 days from Duncansby Head to Land’s End, Fulton decided to ‘only make art resulting from the experience of
individual walks.’ Since then the act of walking has remained central to his artistic practice. He has said ‘If I do not walk, I cannot make a work of art’. Calls for political justice, for Tibet and previously on behalf of Australian Aborigines and North American Indians, also recur in Fulton’s work, corresponding to the individual and artistic freedom embodied within it.

Amy completes commission…….now breathe out.
Cico books, the London-based publisher are launching Anna Black’s ‘Living in the Moment’ in March.
Amy Evans a second-year Illustration student earned the commission to produce over 50 Illustrations for the book, which she worked on over the Summer and into Autumn.

"We were looking for an illustrator who could bring a fresh and imaginative approach to this particular subject, and we found this in Amy's work. We are very pleased with this book as it is different to the many other books available at the moment, and without doubt Amy's work helped us secure sales from a customer that wasn't otherwise interested.

Elmina: An Unusual Black and White Movie

Free Public Lecture by Douglas Fishbone (Video and Performance Artist)
Douglas Fishbone often uses satire and humour within his film, performance and installation works to examine consumer culture and the mass media in a critical and disarming way. His work weaves elaborate narrative and visual tapestries from freely found imagery, often sourced directly from the internet, that question the way information is presented, manipulated and processed in the contemporary visual landscape.
Elmina, Fishbone’s new feature-length melodrama, pushes this exploration in a different direction, presenting an unusual experiment in collaboration that connects two vastly different audiences – the Western art world, and the African home video market. Filmed in Ghana with a cast of major Ghanaian celebrities, Fishbone’s only artistic intervention is the insertion of himself, a white American artist, as the lead role in an otherwise completely African production. The work fully adopts Ghanaian film making conventions, and was written and directed by one of Ghana’s leading production companies. Elmina continues Fishbone’s examination of relativity, perception and the politics of representation and audience engagement, while raising broader questions about race, globalization and the possibility of a shared visual language.
Elmina will be distributed on VCD in Africa and immigrant communities in Europe later in the year, challenging the way both art films and African films are usually produced and distributed.
Elmina had its world premiere at Tate Britain in 2010 and was nominated for an African Movie Academy Award in Nigeria in 2011. It was recently on view at a solo exhibition at CIRCA Projects in Sunderland, at Dublin Contemporary in Ireland, and as part of the exhibition The Global Contemporary: Art Worlds After 1989 at the ZKM in Karslruhe, Germany.

Visual Communications semester 2 programme of talks by creative industry professionals begins on February 9th this year with a presentation by illustrator & film maker, Roderick Mills. The Saachi Gallery have an special free exhibition celebrating this event. The gallery are showcasing the work of some of the world-famous photographers who have contributed to The Sunday Times Magazine since its launch in 1962. You'll see photographs by Don McCullin, David Bailey, Eve Arnold, Snowdon, Sam Taylor-Wood, Terry O'Neill, Uli Weber and many more. The exhibition runs from January 31 until February 19.

Poster for Tomorrow Competition
The condition of women has undergone undeniable improvements during the last century. But these improvements haven’t happened everywhere and even where they have been the strongest, well, they are far from being strong enough.
Gender inequality still lingers unchallenged: it’s one of those things that are hard to see precisely because they are right in front of our eyes.
Design a poster that sees beyond the status quo and imagines a different future. We need gender equality now, because more opportunities for women are more opportunities for us all.

Backing up digital files
Backing up digital files may seem a strange subject for this blog but it is an important topic that regularly crops up with students.
Having spent a considerable amount of time putting together a design solution, what could be worse than finding that document has been lost, or accidentally wiped. Visual Communication staff thoroughly recommend that all digital files are backed up – memory sticks, removable drives or CD’s are ideal for this. There is also an additional location – ‘the cloud’.
Take a look at Drop Box, which offers a free web-based file hosting service.
Drop Box uses cloud storage to enable users to store and share files and folders with others across the Internet using file synchronization. There are both free and paid services, each with varying options. The free service provides 2 GB of free online storage and users who refer Dropbox to others can gain up to 8 GB of additional free storage.

January Letterpress workshops
Harriet Leith has been in touch to share some of her photographs of January's letterpress workshops at the Black Country Living Museum. Harriet, first year graphics student, had an enjoyable day learning to print with the help and assistance of the museums expert printer Ken. Samples of some of the museums regular print are shown in these photographs - look out for the 'behaviour' sign for trams, as well as hand printed paper bags.
