Mary-Lou Owen - Graduate Success

After graduating at The University of Wolverhampton with a BA (hons) in Design for Multimedia I moved to Lowestoft where I became a volunteer at ‘The Crossing LEAP Centre’. The Centre helps people to create CVs, job search and it also provides teaching in basic IT (I walked in by mistake looking for the volunteer centre, and became a volunteer there myself and have been happily helping out for the past two years). I also undertake freelance graphic work whilst volunteering. This includes being asked to create an interactive CD for the The Crossing LEAP Centre. The CD is used as a digital handbook that is given to each client to explain the services that the centre has to offer. The disk also provides useful web sites/links and details of the courses available.

Since graduating I've had some wonderful comments about my skills and my work, some of which I would like to share to with readers of this blog

“Mary-Louise offers some very attractive skills which I’m sure will be of significant benefit to future customers/employers which I would be very happy to endorse in this testimonial .”
“Her skills around I.T. publishing and animated filming software were absolutely incredible.”

Files vary in resolution and there are some vague usage restrictions "image in the public domain believed to be free to use without restriction in the US." So don't think of using them for a major corporate project but you could certainly visuals or other fun personal projects.

Designed by Vernon Adams ‘Trocchi’ takes its inspiration from a number of old faces from the English typecutter Vincent Figgins (1766-1844) including Nebiolo’s ‘Egiziano’, Caslon & Co’s ‘Antique No.4′ and ‘Ionic No.2′. Trocchi comes from these earlier designs and produces a more casual slab serif. It is designed for use both as text and display type. The font is named after the Scottish novelist Alexander Trocchi.

Freebox success

Try Freebox now in the Student Union

Readers of this blog may recall earlier posts about Freebox, an initiative by MA Visual Communication student Dorothee Schmidt.
http://www.visualcommunicationwolverhampton.blogspot.co.uk/2012/03/free-box.html

"The freebox is a concept designed to change our behaviour and attitude towards commodities and the throw-away-society. By breathing new life into an item simply by changing the owner encourages a sense of connection, plus it stimulates and enhances the value of items. The challenge is to promote recycling, reusing and repurposing instead of always buying new." says Dorothee.

After a very successful trial period in the School of Art and Design foyer, the new home of Freebox in the University is the Student Union reception - main site Wolverhampton. Why not take a look at Freebox and if you have something you no longer need but others might, then bring it - or if you see something you like in Freebox, then take it.

Logo competition - International Center for Women Artists

Create the official logo for the International Center for Women Artists – ICWA, a new UNESCO Category II museum and arts education center in Amman, Jordan, celebrating the genius of international women artists.

At UNESCO’s 36th General Conference (November 2011), history was made. For the first time ever, the 194 Member States of UNESCO came together to approve the creation of a new project, the International Center for Women Artists – ICWA. The decision makes it the first museum and arts education project that has formally been approved by all of the Member States of the United Nations from its conception.

The Center will be located in Amman, Jordan, but will be the home for the work of contemporary women artists from around the world. ICWA will have both a permanent collection of art, as well as temporary exhibits. It will also have a travelling exhibit that will bring ICWA’s work to those who cannot travel to Amman.

The Center will also have artists in residence, and will have space for live performances, film and lectures. Working with major technology partners, ICWA will also be present online, bringing its collections and art to people around the world via internet.

The main idea of the Center is to create a place at the crossroads of civilizations – in Jordan – where free expression, education, culture and art are welcome and encouraged. The idea of peace through art has been at the heart of the ICWA project from the start.

The deadline has been extended to the 15th May, but entries are to be submitted digitally.

Images must be jpeg only, resolution 72 DPI, with maximum picture dimensions of 550 x 550 pixels and a file size no greater than 1 MB (uncompressed). You can upload up to six images per entry. *Please note that winners will be asked to submit a final vector file of 300DPI once the announcements are made. Your entry must include a project description in English or French with a maximum of 400 words. Jurors will be reviewing many entries so remember to keep your description as concise and as readable as possible.

No mail entries will be accepted. Please do not create multiple entries for multiple variations of one concept. Please limit your entries to three per individual. Entry is free!

Taiwan International Design Competition

The theme for this years Taiwan International Design Competition is Maximinimization

The Competition is entering its ninth consecutive year and has already cultivated an extensive international reputation.

In addition to encouraging more imaginative and innovative creations, it also hopes to use current trends to inspire designers to engage in more profound philosophical and humanistic reflection. This will allow designers to not just be confined to an 'object' itself, but to incorporate a return to life's subtleties within their design concepts.

"Design is a kind of magic from the heart of the designers. Observing the subtle psyche of consumers, and giving expression to their needs"

This is just like people from the Orient who use the smallest seal to make their greatest commitment with their heart. Likewise, simple and easy steps are employed to complete a complex and difficult operation, employing minimum resources to create maximum effect.

The competition is open to:
Designers; teachers or students of design related departments or schools; people interested in design. (With no restrictions on nationality and age). Participants can join the competition as individuals or in teams. There is no limit on the number of entries.
