Gemma Oldfield - Graduate Success

Congratulations to Visual Communication Multimedia student Gemma Oldfield, who graduated with first class honours in 2011, and won The Sheaffer Prize for Outstanding Work on Live Commissions in Graphic Communication for projects with the Higher Education Academy and West Midlands Fire Service.

Gemma is currently studying the Masters in Digital and Visual Communication at Wolverhampton, and has landed an educational multimedia development job with RTITB, the largest lift truck training accrediting body in the UK and Ireland. http://www.rtitb.co.uk

Andreas Olymbios - MA Student

Having firstly completed my bachelor studies at the University of Wolverhampton, the fulfilling, creative profession of Graphic Design has consumed me. I have been a freelance designer since 2007, which gave me the opportunity to work on range of varied of projects. I have decided to undertake a masters degree in Digital and Visual Communication (Design for Advertising). 

The main thing I have learned, during my academic and working experience, is that, to meet the needs of creative industry, a graphic designer must be multifaceted, and constantly updating their knowledge. I am always seeking ways to improve my skills by utilizing a wide array of sources, ranging from academic literature to contemporary works. I especially take pride in my published works, as appraisal from my peers inspires me to invest further in my profession. 

Choosing a subject for my MA project has helped me to concentrate on an area of design that is new to me. I will be creating a new brand of energy drink and examining the effect of different approaches to advertising and promotion for this new product. The target market is an adult audience aged from 18 to 40 of both sexes. My product will be different from other energy drinks, which are mainly aimed at young consumers with a specific way of life. This product is based on natural ingredients, for consumers with an awareness of health issues. My target audience are busy people with a hectic routine who may feel tired or stressed during the day. 

I am looking forward to continuing my MA. studies and to testing the results of different forms of advertising focused on consumer’s interests and lifestyle.

Nick Stapleton - graduate success

I can’t believe that I’ve gained 14 years experience as a graphic designer, since completing my graphics degree at The University of Wolverhampton. In this time I’ve been lucky enough to work on designs involving a variety media, as well as art directing and shooting photography. I’ve designed for organisations including De Montfort University, Norwich City Council and many other companies. 

Since graduation I have really enjoyed developing my skills and I am now not only responsible for creative output, but I also control marketing and advertising budgets. I particularly enjoy working on re-branding projects that help to raise the profile and boost sales for my clients. 

Moving to a work within a small agency, led to fresh challenges including the excitement of promoting music festivals and theatre productions. I particularly enjoy music, having sung and played in a band for along while. 

My current position allows me to enjoy building on the skills of my previous experience. I work in areas including web design, branding, advertising and design for print. My designs need to capture the essence of the company I work for and help the organisation relate better with its audience, creating a stronger brand that sells more proactively.

TYPE TARTS EXHIBITION - CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

If you are unfamiliar with these things, tart cards are the means by which London prostitutes advertise their services. Step in to any Central London call box and you can contemplate up to eighty cards inviting you to be tied, teased, spanked or massaged either in luxury apartments, fully-equipped chambers or the privacy of your own hotel room.

So pervasive are these things, and so curious is their typography, images and copy writing, they are now regarded as bona fide items of accidental art and have something of a cult following. Once on the periphery of design, the cards have influenced the work of many mainstream artists including Royal Academician Tom Philips and Sex Pistols designers, Ray and Nils Stevenson. The aim is to create witty graphic designs, whilst highlighting the serious issue that lies at the heart of the world of tart cards – the plight of trafficked women in the sex industry.

We would like you to design a tart card either for a typeface or a letter of the alphabet, to ‘find the tart hiding in every type’.

SPECIFICATION• A6 (105 x 148 mm) landscape or portrait.
• Typographic, illustrative, photographic: or a combination of techniques of your choosing.
• Hand or machine made
• Single - or full-colour
• Side 1 – image and text
• Side 2 – sign and date
• Supply hard copy and, electronic versions if possible.

THE RESULTS
All entries will be exhibited in the TypeTarts Exhibition at MediaCity 16th-25th February 2012
After which the collection will be included in the St Bride Library permanent collection.
The deadline for submitting your card (email or physical) is Monday 6th February

The Caparo Prize for Creative Enterprise

Every year one of the prestigious awards offered to students graduating from the School of Art and Design, is The Caparo Prize for Creative Enterprise. The prize is present during the graduation ceremony, in front of an audience of family and friends.

The competition which offers a £100 prize, is open to final year students. If you would like to be considered for this award, you will need to put together a written document that explains and illustrates your achievements in the area of 'enterprise, initiative and or entrepreneurship' within art and design. PAPERGIRL - Birmingham

P A P E R G I R L is a non-commercial art project which aims to take art distribution out of galleries and into the streets via bicycle. It aims to broaden the public consciousness of both local and global artists and provide them with a wider, more liberal venue to exhibit their work.

The project was founded in Berlin by Aisha Ronniger.

Since 2006 Aisha’s idea has inspired like-minded folk from around the globe into organising a Papergirl project in their city.

The concept begins with an open call for art, welcoming anyone creatively minded to submit their work. Drawings, paintings, screen prints, photographs, textiles, stickers, poems, zines… anything that can be rolled up and transported with ease.

Art is collected, exhibited for free, and then distributed to an unsuspecting public, via an atmospheric array of honkingly exuberant and ravishingly roadworthy Brummies on bicycles.

You don’t have to be a girl to be involved in Papergirl. If a blend of cycling, art, and random acts of kindness speak to you, then get in touch to be a part of Birmingham’s first Papergirl.

❖ THE IDEA of the project is to open the art world to people who often don’t instinctively or actively seek it out; to surprise people and bring them into contact with art in their everyday life.

❖ The initial impulse for this project came about due to a tightening of a law in 2005, associating postering in public places with graffiti-spraying. The idea of distributing art by bicycle emerged during the search for new ways to bring art straight to society, and have more fun doing so than out of fear of possible punishment.

❖ The project is all-inclusive and there are no restrictions on medium, nor on participants’ age, education, gender, location or background. Both emerging and more established artists are welcome to take part. This means that all levels and styles of prints, stickers, posters, photos, stories, illustrations, zines, drawings, paintings, fabric, t-shirts come together in one unique roll.

As new forms of media expression are developing, the relationships between the auditory and the visual are undergoing significant changes as well. In this lecture, I will focus specifically on short 'musical films' as one example of a larger shift that includes everything from smartphone apps to smart home environments.

Anahid Kassabian's research and teaching focus on ubiquitous music; music, sound, and moving images; listening; disciplinarity; music and new technologies, especially games, virtual worlds, and pervasive computing; and music and media scholarship drawing on feminist and postcolonial theories.

Anahid is a past editor of Stanford Humanities Review, Journal of Popular Music Studies, a co-founder of Music, Sound and the Moving Image, and past chair of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music. In addition to publishing widely in the areas of film music and ubiquitous music, she has also written numerous articles, with David Kazanjian, on Armenian diasporan film, and she has curated several Armenian film festivals in San Francisco and New York.

Posterheroes is the creative showcase of the proactive debate about consumption’s present and future, and of the energetic and material resources’ aware fruition. After the contest’s rst edition, which was centered on the energies’ production, the second edition proposes the issue of consumption, underlining the user’s rhole as an important actor in the consumption/saving global equilibriums, and not merely as a spectator of broader mechanisms. The contest is a way for young people and for the creative community to express their opinion about the resources’ fruition for a sustainable future.

We are not looking for any styles or techniques in particular, we want to see anything and everything that people have to offer. Lena Matthies - MA Student

My name is Lena Matthies and I am 21 years old. I first studied Communication Design at the Kunstschule Wandsbek in Germany and I am now beginning an MA Digital and Visual Communications within the School of Art and Design at the University of Wolverhampton. 

I have a special, personal interest in design and music. Corporate Design, Illustration, Typography and Photography are parts of the studies which I have particularly enjoyed. My passion for design reflects my keen interest in many diverse kinds of art. Music is also a favourite leisure activity. I have been playing the piano since I was five years old. Since 2007 I have played the piano in public concerts or at private events and compose I my own songs. 

In my MA I am aiming to combine my two favourite passions to make a link between sound and graphics.
I think it is exciting to learn more about music‘s meaning and how it can affect people negatively and positively. Some of the questions I will be addressing in Masters study include: What is music and how can you feel it without hearing it and how does it become a more impactful sensory experience? I would like to analyse music from different perspectives in order to that put together a body of knowledge concerning new practical uses for music. I am interested in people who experiment in the area of this topic, with the aim of presenting my findings in the form of a creative book design, which will also include aspects of my own work. It will be a book which inspires a different approach to thinking about life, employment, design, music and leisure, as well as creating an interest and exciting anticipation for experiencing all things new. This book will bring modern design and music together, nearer to the reader.

Mr Smith's Letterpress Workshop

This is the week of the letterpress workshops at the Black Country Living Museum and each day a fortunate, small group of visual communication students and alumni have been visiting the print shop to learn more about this exciting form of print. Photographs of the workshops will follow soon.

If you have an interest in typography and or letterpress you will be interested to see the following Creative Review film of 'Mr Smith's Letterpress Workshop' in Kennington, London. The workshop is run by Kelvyn Laurence Smith and is chiefly concerned with all things typographic, good practice and quality workmanship. He creates exquisitely crafted contemporary typographic printed matter using traditional wood and metal type.

White Tree has been established for three years and is well known in the art community. White Tree held over 30 exhibitions to date. The private views are always well attended prompting many sales of artworks from the premises. They have a large contact base and are part of the Junction Festival, Wolverhampton society of artists and the Wolverhampton Contemporary art forum.

Hire space £70.00 per week or £100.00 for two weeks.

White Tree will be open from 10.00 – 4.00 Monday to Friday on week days of exhibition not including Saturdays which will be charged at £25.00 extra.

Desearch

Desearch is a peer reviewed postgraduate journal of art and contemporary culture, based in Wolverhampton.

The Roads

Ten Drawings by Leonardo da Vinci: A Diamond Jubilee Celebration

Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery are hosting one of 2012's, sure to be, most popular free exhibitions.

To celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty The Queen, ten of the Royal Collection’s finest drawings by the Renaissance master Leonardo da Vinci will travel to five museums and galleries across the United Kingdom. Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery is the first UK venue to show this exhibition.

Drop by Drop Competition


Drop by Drop is an initiative of the UN Regional Information Centre (UNRIC), in partnership with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, and with the support of the Nordic Council of Ministers.

The purpose is to create a print advertisement that inspires others to preserve water, now and for future generations. The competition calls on professionals and non-professionals to design a newspaper advertisement, using the competition logo, which inspires the European public in a positive way.Text or slogans used in the advertisement can be in any of the official languages of the 48 European countries of eligibility. However all submissions must be translated into English, should they be in another language. Entries submitted without translation will be disregarded.The European ad competition is part of The Future We Want, the UN’s global campaign leading up to the Rio+20 Conference in June 2012. This global conference could change the way we think about our world in terms of economic, social and environmental matters, and that’s why the UN is engaging all citizens to put forward their ideas. Initiatives and competitions like this one from all corners of the globe that will form part of a global conversation about The Future We Want.


Eligibility


The competition is open to all citizens and residents of the 48 UN Member States in Europe: Albania, Andorra, Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Malta, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine and United Kingdom.Participants must be 18 years of age and over.


Prize


Selected by our distinguished jury, the overall winner of the 2012 ’The Future we Want: Drop by Drop’ competition will receive a $6500 cash prize from the Nordic Council of Ministers. A "youth prize" will be provided by Fabrica for participants that are 25 years old or under. The winner, chosen by Fabrica, will receive a two week trial period, which if successful could lead to a full year grant and internship at Fabrica. The two-week trial includes tutoring, facilities, work station, hospitality in a shared apartment in Treviso (30 minutes from Venice) and lunch at the Fabrica restaurant. UNRIC will cover the round-trip travel costs of the trial winner.A public vote prize will be offered by the Portuguese Government to the entry receiving the most votes from the public. Although the competition is only open to Europeans, everyone from around the world can vote for their favourite ad.

Creative Education are the country’s largest provider of on the job teacher training and are looking for a talented, enthusiastic and – yes – creative designer to help make our brand beautiful.

As the company’s sole specialist you’ll need to be something of an all rounder. The vast majority of the work will be print based, supporting our very successful direct mail to schools, but other related skills including flash, web, and other online disciplines will all be to your advantage.

Your role will be to design and manage of the production of all our creative material. We want your opinion on the brief and you can help shape them with your own creative input and ideas.

Whether you’re looking for a full or part time role, we’d be delighted to hear from you. Part time applicants should be able to commit at least 3 days a week.

We’re looking for a real creative thinker, who can work independently and to a brief. You should be a strong communicator and also be able to get under the skin of our customers, producing work that will really appeal to them.

This may be your 1st post, it may be your 31st, but relevant prior experience and a strong portfolio of work is essential. Your artwork will be produced on Adobe Creative Suite so you must be completely comfortable with Photoshop, Illustrator and Indesign (and ideally Dreamweaver as well).
