Adobe Design Achievement Awards - Kate Farrell, semi-finalist 2011

Recent graphics graduate Kate Farrell has been selected as a semi-finalist for the prestigious 2011 Adobe Design Achievement Awards - Print Communications category.

Her submission is 'Kern' magazine design based on the article: 'Letters from the 20th Century'(original copy written by Kate herself). Photography of found objects and digital Illustrations personifies the written concept with the mix of images that reference traditional as well as more contemporary design materials.

Kate's design sets out embody an exploration into the future of design, with a focus on originality and influence, particularly investigating type design. Her submission is influenced by the creative ideologies of movements including Dada, Constructivism and Futurism. Kate is taking the time to ask the question, has the digital typeface killed off the appreciation of the design object?

Jessica Glaser and Carolyn Knight interview with David Garcia for Yorokobu Magazine

How did you get the idea of creating a book on diagrams?
As designers and lecturers within the School of Art and Design at the University of Wolverhampton UK, we are aware that diagrammatic information is frequently utilised ‘as image’ within a variety of design solutions. Diagrams are being used by choice, not simply because statistical data needs to be interpreted. It’s also evident that increasingly graphic design needs to communicate to international audiences, using visual language, as opposed to a written alternative.
Having researched examples of diagrams we realise that there is a fascinating and varied wealth of designs that when brought together, make a valuable and extremely interesting book. We feel that “there are no rules and regulations as to what has to be included in a visual interpretation of data, so long as it communicates in a manner that can be understood. Any images, marks, and text can be used. ‘Diagrams’ introduces readers to an exceptional standard and variety of imaginative information graphics that incorporate a whole raft of techniques.” (sourced from the introduction to Diagrams by Carolyn Knight and Jessica Glaser)

How much time have you been working on the book?
It has probably taken 9 months from start to finish. Initially we have researched and contacted appropriate designers from around the world, to invite them to submit examples of their work. We have then selected designs that fit in to 5 sections and proceeded to analytically write about the graphic design decisions that defined each piece; in each instance, we have enjoyed liaising with the designers to ascertain their methodologies, and details of the initial brief to which they have responded. The sections deal with diagrammatic interpretations for branding and promotion, statistics, environmental design, reference and instruction and finally reference and exhibitions.

What can I find in the book?
The book includes a wealth of exciting, high quality diagrammatic interpretations of information, created by talented designers from around the world and is extremely stimulating and inspiring, both visually and intellectually. Even if a search for a method of diagrammatic interpretation is not a main aim, this book is a highly captivating read. Many of the featured designs are very original, taking unexpected, creative approaches. Each example is accompanied by a helpful explanation and analysis as well as, in many cases, reference information that contextualises the designers’ inspiration.
“If information graphics were once considered uninspiring and lacking in creativity, the contemporary design solutions in this book provide a totally different and fascinating perspective.” (sourced from the introduction to Diagrams by Carolyn Knight and Jessica Glaser)
The book is accompanied by a CD of copyright free symbolic images that can be easily employed, adapted, referenced and personalized for use within future designs.

Can you tell me about both of you, your work at your studio, background, previous books?
We are writers, graphic designers and educators. We have written and designed seven books. ‘Layout: Making It Fit’, our first book was published by Rockport and fundamentally discusses the use of space in graphic design, particularly exploring the challenges of designing with quantities of information in limited space and small amounts of information within more generous space. Our second book, published this time by Rotovision, is called ‘The Graphic Designers’ Guide to Effective Visual Communication’ and focuses on creating hierarchies using type, image and colour. ‘Sticky Graphics’, again a Rotovision publication, deals with the manner in which designers produce highly mnemonic designs that utilise memorable qualities to create impact, and was our third publication. Our next 2 titles are ‘Create Impact with Type, Image and Color’ and ‘Print and Production Finishes for Bags, Labels and Point of Purchase’ and our most recent books are ‘Diagrams: Innovative Solutions for Graphic Designers’, and ‘The Graphic Design Exercise Book’. We are delighted that Gustavo Gili is publishing both of these in Spanish and we hope they will be received well.

We enjoy running a design studio called Bright Pink that handles a broad spectrum of design work for such areas as housing, beauty, finance, health and textiles. We also both have many years of teaching experience within lively the Graphic Communication subject area of the University of Wolverhampton.

We constantly have design projects and writing assignments ‘on the go’ and are perpetually enthusiastic and committed to excellence and innovation in graphic design.

Matt Zarandi

Whilst I always showed a keen interest in graphic design throughout my early years, I initially studied Law at university. I completed the course, obtained a degree, but then decided to have an early career change and move into graphics. Not the most direct routes I could have taken, however it makes a great talking point!

My Graphic Communication degree, undertaken at Wolverhampton University is a time I will look back on with fond memories. The staff and students were great but most of all, and probably most importantly, so was the course. I always find through speaking with others who have studied graphic design elsewhere, that this course gave students a greater depth of education.

I initially started my career working within e-commerce in the retail sector whilst also studying at university. I was based in Wolverhampton for four years before moving to London to take on my current role as Digital Designer for The Football Association… my dream job!

My role consists of creating digital assets across The FA and Wembley Stadium whilst also having a responsibility in maintaining the appearance of the organization in this environment. I therefore get to work on plenty of exciting projects such as the current redesign of TheFA.com and motion videos to be played on the Wembley big screen during England matches.

The technical learning curve is exponential and certainly a challenge that I love as working for such a high profile organization requires me to always stay ahead of the game whilst always keeping an eye on the latest technologies that are coming around the corner.

I feel very privileged to be in the position I am and to be able to combine my favourite sport and hobby into my work life. Everyday when I get off the train and out of Wembley Park station, I have to pinch myself as I see the enormous Wembley arch spanning the horizon which always fills me with excitement for what lies ahead!

Whilst the design industry is very competitive and tough to break into, if you know what you want and are willing to go out there and get it, then anything is achievable. It also helps to have a good starting point which the University of Wolverhampton certainly gives!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Working for organisations with a connection with professional sport, seems to be a popular career path for Wolverhampton graphics graduates. Also see:

Filippos Filippou, recent graphic's graduate, from Papphos, Cyprus, he has just heard that his film, made as part of of his final year projects, has been shortlisted for the Filmic Festival in Manchester.

This is great news say Julia Chidley and Ian Madeley.

“We are delighted that Filippos’s film on the theme of ‘waiting’ has been so favourably received and we wish him the best of luck and have our fingers crossed in the final stages of selection” they continued.

The Filmic Film Festival will Showcase a selection of the most abstract, unconventional and stylized film in the UK, festival is going to be a unique display and celebration of independent cinema and film-making talent.
Festival organisers are looking for the most engaging, exciting and unconventional material to exhibit at the film festival screenings which will take place later this year. It is planned that the festival will include networking opportunities, screenings and guest speakers.

Typographic Research Initiative in Wolverhampton

This afternoon saw the School of Art and Design successfully hosting the latest meeting of the Typographic Research Initiative. Today's symposium and addressed by 3 speakers, graphic designer Louise Carrier (http://www.louisecarrier.co.uk/), Graphic Communication Subject Leader, Jeff Leak and Senior Lecturer and graphic designer, Jessica Glaser.

3 fascinating talks prompted plenty of discussion and thought provoking debate. Louise Carrier (featured in the photographs shown within this post) eloquently compared the experience of reading the printed version UK newspaper the Sunday Times, with her approach to it's online counterpart.

Jeff Leak discussed and shared his extensive collection of photographs of historic painted signs form the French roadside, as well as his growing selection of faded neon signs form Hungary and beyond.

Jessica Glaser reflected upon the synchronicity of visual and verbal language, with particular reference to page layout and her own personal experience of being a designer who is also a writer.

Graduate success: Neely Reyes

Since graduating with a degree in Graphic Communication from the University of Wolverhampton, life has been very exciting for Neely Reyes.

In 2005 Neely opened Sapphires Model management.

'When we first opened the agency, I used to spot people in the streets and run at them waving my business card in the air,' Neely, who established the agency in 2005, admits. 'In retrospect I must have looked like a total loony! But no one can ever accuse me of not being committed; once I nearly got crushed by a bus running after a model on the other side of the road. It all pays off in the end, though. There's nothing quite like scouting a young, potential model just working a regular day job, then developing them and watching them work their way up the ranks in the industry.

'Although we still street scout, we find that people are coming to us thanks to our reputation. We receive around 200 applications a week from all across the world; it's one less thing to worry about.'

As well as the agency, Neely is also an accomplished art director, creating and styling shoots for brands such as Harvey Nichols and Selfridges and celebrities including Adam Garcia, Dougray Scott and Billy Boyd.

'When I style shoots I like to create and develop my own brief,' Neely says. 'I plan the theme, find the location, pick the wardrobe and then just pull everything together. I'm like a kid in a sweet shop when I go and select my shoot pieces.

‘I’ve loved all the celebrities I’ve worked with, but working with Adam Garcia was like a dream come true. Like most people of my age, I had a huge crush on him growing up and can confirm that he’s just as good looking in person. When Adam wore the clothes I personally picked out for him it was like having my own, real-life Ken doll.’
