Just Have to Share - Ghostsigns

What are Ghostsigns?
Ghostsigns are the often faded remains of advertising that was once painted by hand onto the brickwork of buildings. They can be found in cities, towns and villages throughout the UK and across the world. They advertise many different products and services, some familiar, some less so.

The key to finding Ghostsigns is paying attention to the buildings you pass and looking up, as they are often situated high on the walls.

Many signs have survived until today but many more have been lost due to weathering, being over-painted or their host building being destroyed. Ghostsigns exists to create a permanent record of their existence for the benefit of our own and future generations’ understanding of this important but often overlooked part of our commercial, craft and advertising history. The work of pulling this together is co-ordinated among photographers, researchers and other volunteers via the web.

Ghostsigns was started by London resident Sam Roberts in 2006, the project has undertaken a number of initiatives over the last seven years and continues to inspire amateurs and professionals alike to appreciate the painted history found on walls around the world.

Ghostsigns is part of the History of Advertising trust and can be viewed at:

Poundland competition success

Design by Christy Guan

Two students from the School of Art and Design have won a prestigious competition to re-design summer 2014 and 2015 ‘bags for’ life for Poundland.

The students, Christy Guan, final-year Graphic Design student and Charlotte Ellery, final-year fashion/textiles student have generated two original designs to be used by Poundland for the next two summers.

The competition was open to students from the School of Art and Design and the brief was to produce designs that could be used throughout the summer months, the initial plan was to produce one design but the client was so pleased with the quality of the submissions that they decided to use two, there were also two runners up Sarah Collins from Graphics and Naomi Hague from Fashion and Textiles.

The winning students will be credited on the designs, with a conservative estimate of thousands of bags printed, each one will become an advertisement for the work of the school’s students, Charlotte and Christy will be working with Poundland’s in-house design team, seeing their ideas through to production thereby gaining valuable experience.

Sharon Watts, subject leader for Fashion/Textiles said it is so important for students to undertake live industry focused projects, it gives a real sense of deadlines, market and client issues and sharpens students problem solving skills. The fashion and textiles students really rose to the challenge in designing bags for Poundland and produced some exciting dynamic designs that were very fit for purpose.

John Clementson course leader for Visual Communications is delighted that the students have produced such a wide range of quality artwork for the competition:

"The students engagement with this competition from Visual Communication and Fashion/Textiles has been fabulous, there were some really strong designs for the client to choose from. I would like to congratulate all who took part for producing a number of high quality, artworks."

Pavan Riyat-Ward Marketing Controller said:
“At Poundland we like to ensure the design of our reusable bags are new and exciting for our customers. This year we decided to work with the local talent of the Graphic Design and Fashion & Textile students at the University of Wolverhampton and invite them to submit designs for our new reusable bags with a summer theme. We were so impressed with the quality of the submissions that we have decided to progress with two designs created by Charlotte and Christy for 2014 and 2015.

We’d like to thank all the students who got involved with the project – the high calibre of designs made for a very challenging selection process! Charlotte’s design will be in Poundland’s stores nationwide from June.”

Havas Worldwide London 2014 Graduate Programme

Are you good on paper?
To some, the application process will look easy...
Others will see it as virtually impossible.

The task is simply to use one side of A4 (or its digital equivalent) to demonstrate why we should choose you for our graduate programme.
Make an ad, formulate a thesis, doodle a storyboard.
Or none of the above. The space is yours.

The only rule is to email, post, or otherwise convey your submission to us so that it arrives on or before the 14th March 2014.

A number of applicants will be invited in for an interview. A smaller number will then be selected to spend next summer with us on a paid, six-week internship. Interviews take place in April, Internships start in June. If you like us and we like you, we offer you a job at Havas Worldwide London.

Like the blank sheet of paper now staring up at you, nothing could be simpler. Or more terrifying.
