Junior/Middleweight designer POSITION FILLED

We have just received a message form one of our students who is undertaking a placement at design company Sixth Story Birmingham.
I'm currently working for a company over the summer in Birmingham called Sixth Story. They are looking to recruit a graduate or someone with 1-2 years experience. Thought I'd pass the message on, incase you knew of any graduates or someone looking for a Graphic Design job within commuting distance to Birmingham.

I've been here around 2 weeks now and it's been a really positive experience. The fact they visualise all of their work before jumping onto the computer, is a massive plus in my opinion. They are a very creative team with good clients.

This position has now been successfully filled by a visual communication graduate.

Their current website (which is being updated as we speak) is http://www.sixthstory.co.uk

Warm Praise for Hazardous Placement

Congratulations to final-year visual communication students Dean Burgan (Graphic Communication) and Gemma Oldfield (Design for Multimedia) pictured here with James 'Jim' Marriott from the West Midlands Fire Service Academy, who have been working together to produce interactive electronic-learning materials to assist the training of Fire Service employees in simulations for handling radiation and hazardous materials. The students said of the project: "What a great experience working with a well established local service. Who would have thought a live brief could be so much fun and we would get to work with a great bunch of guys."

In response, Jim said: “I have had the pleasure of working with Gemma and Dean on numerous occasions and have only ever been impressed with their work ethic and interest. They have not only met for appointments at the university but also come to Fire service premises where they have acted in a professional manner absorbing information on an obviously difficult subject with relative ease. Working with these enthusiastic and committed students from Visual Communications has been a pleasure. They are a credit to themselves, the University, and any prospective employer.”

Graduate success: Anthony O'Flaherty

The Final show has proved to be an excellent opportunity to catch up with visiting graduates. One such designer coming back to view the work of this years new graduates has been Anthony O'Flaherty, Head of Creative for a global Telecommunications retailer. Anthony now has over 12 years commercial experience in Direct Marketing, Advertising, Publishing, Multimedia and Lithographic Print. His clients include The Carphone Warehouse, Channel 4, Pedigree, Ecospil, Onestop phone shop, Scholastic and Holidays Please.
“When I think back to my time studying Graphic Communication, the things that were most important in the successful development of my future career path were the variety of modules, that went far beyond the perceived boundaries of a 'graphic design' course.” said Anthony“ He continued “I also think one of the most important factors about studying graphics at Wolverhampton was that my tutors had real experience in the real world. I remember having many long conversations with my tutors, sometimes after hours and borrowing their own private books and getting a genuine feeling of them wanting to help you. I left Wolves Uni not only with design capability, but also with the ability to speak about my work in a concise and creative manner which really helped me progress quickly within my chosen profession.”

Twelve 20 - graduate success

Twelve20 was formed 7 years ago, by Darren Langham and Matt Tullett after their graduation from Wolverhampton University Graphic Communication degree.
"Wolverhampton is a great place to explore and create new ideas" says Matt. "Working on projects together while at Uni we were able to see how working as a team was more beneficial then just working on your own. It was this team work that helped us to set up twelve20. We work for a number of clients, ranging from small start-up businesses to large PLC's and not forgetting charities. This has given us a great range of experience, including branding and developing large CMS driven websites."

"We have also put together our own product which is designed to help 'start ups' and small business to create a website and be up and running with a professional online presence in no time.

By creating Abel Website Builder (http://en-able-me.co.uk) we have viewed a project from the clients point of view and this has allowed us to use this new insight when dealing with our clients." said Darren
