Graphic Design Intern

This is a great opportunity for a graduate who is looking to build a career in design and development in digital media.

You will already be proficient in the use of Adobe Creative Suite, in particular Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign.

You are a highly visual, creative individual with tons of initiative and enthusiasm who will relish the opportunity to be in a start up environment. Creative Internship - Jack Morton in London

Creative Internship available at Jack Morton in London

Do you have Obsessive Creative Disorder?

You’ll know it if you have it. You seem to hoard creative thoughts and awesome ideas. But you know the difference between the good ideas and the bad ones. And you’re certainly not the type who just sees pretty things and paints them.

Maybe you can paint though. Maybe write. Maybe design. But that’s not the most important thing to us. We’re looking at the stuff inside your head; your lateral thinking; your savvies. We’re looking for what it is about you, which makes us think that the industry’s not going to know what’s hit it.

Jack Morton is a marketing agency that prides itself on clever thinking; an agency that receives a huge range of challenging and exciting briefs that constantly keep us on our toes.

Some of these briefs will require us to create brand experiences for things like large B2B events and these are briefs which, if put into the wrong hands, have potential for very, very dull delivery.

But that doesn’t suit us. It makes our bum look big.

And that’s why our clients choose us. Because Jack Morton is all about wetting anything that is too dry. Delivering the most creative solutions to our clients to help them, and us, stand out as ‘ideas led’.

And we are realists. We understand the challenges in not only generating bold ideas, but selling them in to clients. But this doesn’t stop us from being brave.

So, if you think you’re brave enough and brilliant enough to join us, then we’ve got a little challenge for you; in fact, we might even have a career for you.

Closing date is 12 July 2013.

Graven images

Jeff Leak again spoke about type in the environment at the School of Art and Design CADRE Research Conference.

His talk, Graven Images, presented a study of the graphic iconography and statuary of the cemetery with particular reference to the diversity of typographic embellishment in Budapest’s Kerepesi Cemetery. The imagery that he showed formed a small part of his visual record of lettering from cemeteries around the world – recording their lettering, texture; their relevance to a point in time, their decoration, their ornamentation and statuary.

Some of our greatest typographers have begun their understanding of type by having to carve it into stone.

Eric Gill (buried in Speen Baptist Churchyard) has created his own stone  upon which he states his life’s work to have been stone carver.

John Baskerville, master printer and creator of the eponymous typeface, first made his fortune as a headstone engraver. Today his body lies in Warstone Lane Cemetery, Hockley

Research and contextualisation about carved letterforms and funereal iconography revealed a surprising amount of published reference. Reading around a lot of this work – it more often than not focused on the description, content or context rather than the graphic characteristics of the sepulchers - but it was this particular area that Jeff illustrated and spoke about.

He concluded by showing how this interest had inspired the creation of a number of published designs, some of which are shown below.

Designer/Illustrator - One, Oxford

Designer/Illustrator
It’s simple really. We’re looking for a talented young designer with strong commercial illustrations skills to come and play. You’d be working on a variety of projects, across brand, print and digital – some creative and exciting, some grunty but necessary….

As well as your CV and portfolio, we’d like you to:
• Send us a written rant about something – as long or short as you like.
• Make a link between “cake” and “robot”

Oh, so you want paying? Well, we’ve got some money in the pot which is probably less than you’re officially worth, but we hope you’ll happily take it as you’ll be working with a great team of people in a great little company.

If you think you’re the right person for the job, but don’t officially have the right kinds of qualifications or experience – please do apply anyway. This job is not just about what you’ve done, it’s a lot about who you are as well.

Just have to share - An afternoon of printing and cream tea

The Baskerville Society in conjunction with The Typographic Hub present an afternoon of printing and cream tea at Winterbourne House and Garden Saturday 22 June, at 1pm

Restored to its Edwardian Arts and Craft splendour, Winterbourne House is a unique heritage attraction – set within seven acres of beautiful botanic gardens. Only minutes from Birmingham city centre, Winterbourne is a hidden gem – home to beautiful antiques and over 6,000 plant species from around the world. The visit will include a special demonstration of letterpress printing using equipment of the newly established Winterbourne Press. In addition, the garden is notable for its many hand carved letterforms and sculptures in wood and stone and guests will be taken on a guided tour of these lovely examples of horticultural art. Tea and coffee will be available for purchase in the delightful terrace tea room on the ground floor of the house, which serves tea, cakes and other refreshments throughout the day.

Directing the designs

A final year student from the University of Wolverhampton has designed and created unique illustrations which were presented at an Institute of Directors awards ceremony.

The West Midlands Director of the Year Awards has become the IoDs most successful annual event attracting a high standard of entrants. The organisation felt it was only fitting that those who have worked hard to create jobs and prosperity in the region were properly rewarded with a unique piece of art.

Benjy James Young, who studies Visual Communications designed bespoke digital prints that all related to the individual categories.

IoD Regional Director, John Phillips, said: "We are delighted we are able to commission work for a new artist and not only provide them with a platform to gain valuable publicity but involve them in our event and mentor them with essential business advice."

This year we were particularly grateful to Benjy James Young. Benjy produced some very special art work which followed the theme of the six awards, including the prestige IoD West Midlands Director of the Year Award. It means our winners have a very individual and personal trophy and not just a block of glass taken from a shelf in a shop!”

The University has a strong bond with the IoD who supports the University through their student mentoring activity and utilises the valuable source of creative talent from the School of Art and Design.

Visual Communications Course Leader, John Clementson said “The Visual Communication team is always keen to create links with the wider business community and we delighted to support the Institute of Directors and further strengthen the university relationship. We are overjoyed with the work that Benjy has produced for the organisation and the experience and kudos gained from taking on such a project will be invaluable as Benjy embarks on what we hope will be a hugely successful career.”
