Letterpress - Trip Print Press 2

Readers of this blog have undoubtedly seen the film previously posted on Trip Print Press. The company, based in Toronto Canada have been kind enough to share some more images and details of their work.

Trip Print describe themselves as:
“Purveyors of custom, contemporary and traditional letterpress printing. Specializing in fine mercantile printing, business and social Stationery, packaging, ephemera and special projects”

The invention of printing with moveable type, is attributed to Johannes Gutenberg of Mainz on the Rhine in the mid 15th century. The subsequent mass communication of information and knowledge has literally transformed the world. It has become one of the most important events in cultural history and pleasingly, the technology has remained in widespread use for over five centuries. Remarkably, the method still used today are almost exactly the same as Gutenberg would have used.

One of rewards of working with letterpress comes from the creation of a design that is not only tactile and beautiful, but also ‘green’, as in it’s most simple form, wooden and metal letters can be reused, time after time. As a consequence of the hand-crafted nature of letterpress, no two prints are exactly the same.

Watching an experienced craftsperson at work is a wonderful learning opportunity – the skill and patience required is really inspiring. The film shown here is from Brought To You By films and has been generously shared by Nicholas Kennedy of Trip Print Press.

The film shows the printing of a series of letterpress business cards - the sounds of letterpress machines seem almost musical, Take a look and enjoy this glimpse behind the scenes.

Toni Williams in Shropshire Review Magazine

Third year Illustration student Toni Williams has recently been featured in Shropshire Review Magazine. Toni is working with Amy Hill, a graduate from Wolverhampton with a specialism in media and film production. Together the 2 are developing a film project.

“My area will be creating illustrations to help advertise the event and I will also be illustrating the screening of the film and maybe even a DVD cover if it progresses that far." said Toni

Over the summer Toni has taken on a commission to illustrate a children's book “I had around two weeks to split the story up into nine double page spreads, including a title page. My technique in illustrating the story was using 3d models as the main characters, phototransfers for backgrounds, and line drawing,” she says.

So if you are one of those individuals, and you are looking for an entertaining, time wasting exercise, why not try 'Kill Comic Sans'.

Ed Ruscha - High Spots

The event began with an introduction by Anthony d’Offay who spoke of describing the Wolverhampton exhibition to his friend, Ed Ruscha and describing it as
“beautiful, distinguished and you’ll like it a lot”
On seeing the exhibit, Ruscha responded by exclaiming “I love it!”

The two long-term friends then proceeded round the exhibition stopping to discuss the various works on show. The first to be discussed was Metro Plot.

Rucha described this painting of Los Angeles as an oblique view that is anonymous. He went on to comment about making a work that he described as being very universal.

The tour moved to one of Ruscha’s mountain paintings ‘Daily Planet’. The artist described the work as having “a mysterious and teasing title”. He reminisced about starting work on mountain views in the 1990’s, with a notion of making pictures by using words and painting them in some way.

“A mountain was a perfect foil for what was happening in the foreground. The images based on photos and movies were a collage in my mind of what a mountain would be like – it could be any mountain, anywhere”.

The next work was inspired by J. G. Ballard’s ‘High Rise’. Ruscha described the book as disturbing and compelling and spoke of taking a section of the work that deals with troubles that can arise from a life of disorder in the environment – this segment of the novel, Ruscha saw in the form of a picture.

Anthony d’Offay
“Think of how you annunciate this word Ed”
“Ohhh Kaaay” said Ed Ruscha “I am just a yes man” he continued.

Ruscha was questioned about the lettering in his work and he commented that he had set out to create something that is easy to make using straight lines – a lettering style that he has called ‘Boy Scout Utility Modern’.

20th Century Fox is perhaps one of Ruscha’s most well known works. He described it as reminding him of the triumphal feeling at the beginning of a movie – trumpets blowing and blaring lights.

“It possesses this megaphone effect I love, a shouting out in a certain way” This painting was juxtaposed in the exhibition with ‘Gasoline Station’.

“I spend little time agonising over colour as I possibly can – sometimes I see in black and white, sometimes I see in colour”

One of the next works to be discussed was Hollywood.
“My studio was on Western Avenue and I could look out of the window and see the sign that had once said ‘Hollywoodland’. I would view this and sometimes it would be very smog laden. I used it as a barometer – if I could see the sign, it was not such a bad day”.

“My work is done with brushes, stencils and every trick in the book – sometimes I use projection, sometimes no – every picture is different”

Talking about his thoughts on Ruscha’s work ‘Some pretty eye’s and some electric bills’ Anthony d’Offay commented that
“I always thought that this was a good definition of marriage”.

Ruscha’s first book was published in 1962 and he still makes books and has done consistently, but with some dry years.
“ I can see how artists would be ‘turned on by the tactile qualities of making books” Ruscha commented.

This exhibition is on until 29th October

Free Public Lecture by Alia Syed

You are invited to the CADRE Lecture Series Free Public Lecture by
Alia Syed (Associate Lecturer, Southampton Solent University)
Tuesday 25th October 2011, 6.00pm, MK045

Residual Makeovers
“Alia Syed’s work embraces a wide range of film practices, refusing to sit in a single, definable form. Her films explore issues of identity and representation, often employing rhythmic and cyclical elements in which characters, places, text, images, and sound coincide with and at times oppose conventional narrative structures”.

As an experimental film maker my practise has always reflected the process of making, viewing analogue and digital film making not as interchangeable forms of expression but as autonomous mediums that carry with them particular cultures. In this lecture I will show extracts from recent work illustrating my relationship to both 16mm film and digital moving image production, discussing the specificity of each medium and how content speaks through form. I will show extracts from Priya (2011), a materialist 16mm film, Wallpaper, (2010): a performative documentary, spanning four generations of women: A Story Told, (2006), a multiscreen installation made for the gallery as well as my current project Panopticon letters.

Second International Illustration Symposium; Illustration & Writing

The Second International Illustration Symposium; Illustration & Writing is taking place on November 3 and 4 at Manchester Metropolitan University. Illustration Lecturers Howard Read, Ben Kelly and John Clementson will be participating.

The 2nd International Illustration Research Symposium looks to illustration as an expression of the ‘primary language of vision’ (Kepes) and aims to integrate its practices and philosophies, both historical and emerging. The event seeks to expand the theoretical and practical frameworks and nuances of this potent and far-reaching discipline.

Illustration and Writing will look at illustration as visual language, and reflect on the role of the image within, around and in place of writing. We hope to explore the ways that purposeful images can augment, clarify or problematise meaning in relation to text.

Graphics students make the everyday extraordinary

Final year graphics students have visited the Design Museum as part of their participation in a fascinating interdisciplinary project.

This year 'Design Factory' have invited students to respond to an exciting brief set by Brit Insurance Design of the Year winners, designer Samuel Wilkinson and product design company Hulger. Using research from Design Museum exhibitions, online resources and college based creative practices, students will be asked to submit work in answer to the brief to make the everyday extraordinary. During their time at the museum students enjoyed seeing highlights from the museum's collection including the Anglepoise lamp, UK road signs, UK traffic lights, the candlestick telephone and the Moulton bicycle. The group also viewed the telephone box, known as the K6 Kiosk, which celebrates its 75th birthday this year. It was introduced in 1936 to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of the coronation of King George V. The "Jubilee Kiosk", as it became known, was designed by English architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott (1880-1960) and was similar, but smaller than its predecessor the K2, also designed by Sir Giles. The older K2 had not featured outside London, but the "Jubilee" model became the first genuinely standard telephone box to be installed all over the country.

Also on exhibition, the traffic lights, redesigned by David Mellor in 1966, were commissioned by the Department of the Environment as part of the total redesign of the national road traffic sign system. Mellor's iconic design is still in use today and are a familiar sight on British roads.

"We also visited visited Tate Modern to see the work of Tacita Dean (one-time Wolverhampton lecturer) the latest artist to create a commission for Tate Modern's Turbine Hall as part of the Unilever Series.

An inspiring day was had by all"
said Julia Chidley

Your invitation to St Ives

Monday 31st October 2011 return Wednesday 2nd November 2011

The Visual Communications department is planning a number of trips this year. The first being to St Ives in Cornwall and is open to students and alumni.

St Ives is renowned for its art and rightly so as there are workshops, studios and galleries everywhere. Tate St Ives, part of the Tate Gallery in London, is a stunning building with varying exhibitions of local and national works and is well worth a visit.
http://www.tate.org.uk/stives/

The gallery's inspirational building stands high above the surfing beach of Porthmeor and features exhibitions which represent the modern 'St Ives School' of painters such as Peter Lanyon, Patrick Heron and Sir Terry Frost as well as a changing programme of other contemporary work. Allied to Tate St Ives is the Barbara Hepworth Museum, a lasting memorial to the great sculptress who lived and worked in St Ives at her Trewyn Studio. Her workshop has been carefully preserved and made accessible; the gardens and house contain many examples of her work and some of her finest pieces.

If you have not visited St Ives before, this is a trip not to be missed!

The St Ives trip is limited to 20 places and payment has to be made by the end of Monday (17th October). Prices include travel and B&B accommodation. To find out costs, more detail and to book your place see:

Competition success for Blair Frame

Final year Illustration student Blair Frame, has won the runners-up prize in the prestigious Cheltenham Illustration Awards 2011 (student category).

"The pieces I've submitted are a selection of images and spreads from a story book I produced for my second year project entitled ‘Reynardine'. says Blair "The story is from an old folk tale (reworked into a song by Fairport Convention), about a Werewolf who lures young girls away to his castle. I wanted to make the tale into a story with contemporary relevance. My illustrations contextualise this tale as a story of trafficking young girls into the sex industry."

"The Illustration staff team are delighted at Blair’s success, his original idea and the quality of the artwork deservedly won recognition in this prestigious national competition." says John Clementson

Blair lives in Dudley and has received a prize of £500, plus considerable national recognition.
